As part of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+
People National Action Plan, funded by Crown Indigenous Relations and Northern
Affairs Canada, Amautiit Nunavut Inuit Women’s Association reviewed legal protections
for women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ (two-spirited, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer,
questioning, intersex, asexual) people. See more on the whole project here.


Gender Markers on GN Identification
As of September 2025, the law allows changes to gender on GN-issued identification,
and also a non-binary gender options. LINK

However those changes will not take effect until Regulations and
application forms are developed, a process which the GN said might take up to 18

Nunavut Human Rights Tribunal
In March 2024 we published a report on the profound failures of the Nunavut Human
Rights Tribunal and our recommendations. To date we have received no
acknowledgement or reply from either that Tribunal or the Government of Nunavut,
despite our follow-up letter in July 2025. The Tribunal’s website reflects no material

Income Assistance
We considered the Income Assistance Regulations – unchanged since before Nunavut
was a territory – and noted that an income assistance officer has broad and unfettered
powers to require a recipient to undergo treatment or counselling, or work for free or in
unsafe conditions, completely at the discretion of the income assistance officer.

Protection of Personal Information
We considered gaps in the legal protections for personal information in Nunavut – the
organizations that Nunavummiut interact with and depend upon, that have no obligation
to keep that information private.

Praise
In the course of other research into GN processes, we looked at many application
forms. We noted that one set of application forms, for Financial Assistance to Nunavut
Students, were admirably easy to use, and clearly drafted with privacy considerations in
